'Things people say to Artists'
- An anthology of artist's stories
"Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change." - Brené Brown
Sharing your art is a vulnerable endeavor. As a photographer and painter, I've sold my wares in various public markets and juried shows for more than 20 years. During that time I've encountered a wide array of reactions from customers - ranging from pure adulation to stubborn disbelief. It's human nature to cling to the negative - 100 positive comments in a day can be tainted with one comment of 'I could do that too!'. I've also been the director of a local art festival for more than a dozen years and have heard my fair share of comments.
I want to collect stories about artist's experiences showing their art, attending shows, encounters with clients. The practice of being an artist is a constant stretch of the vulnerability 'muscle'. Putting yourself and your work out for public consumption is not for the faint of heart.
Share your story - the most inspiring comment, the weirdest moment, the strangest response to your art. As a community we can share some laughs and celebrate our collective experience. This book is a way to promote and celebrate art. Your name, website link and artwork will be included in the publication if you choose it to be public.
Submit your story by June 1, 2023. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee and you will be notified of your acceptance into the anthology publication by August 15, 2023. You will receive an email with additional details if your story is accepted in our publication.
*TIPS:
Remove/change the name of anyone in your story that has not given expressed written consent to be included.
Stories must be a minimum of 65 words and a maximum of 250 words.
